You will come home from Confluence with your camera roll full and your friends asking questions. Here are 12 spots, in the order a good photo day runs, that will do the selling for you.
Sunrise
- The Confluence footbridge at first light. The three rivers meet right under your feet and the mist off the water is free atmosphere.
- Ramcat access at 6 AM on a still morning. Reflections you will not believe.
Morning Light
- The GAP Trail just outside town. Side light filtering through trees, a river in every shot.
- The Yough tailwater below the dam. Fog clings to the cold water into July.
- Turkeyfoot Valley Historical Society exterior with Logan Place Park in the foreground. Classic small-town architecture.
Midday (yes, really)
- Yough Lake at Outflow. Clear days mean glassy water and deep greens. Zoom in on the far ridgeline.
- Inside Tissue Farm. Ask first, then make a frame that tells a coffee story with art on the back wall.
- The streetscape on the Confluence town square. Sun-bleached, charming, honest.
Afternoon
- The Casselman footbridges. Light through the iron trusses all afternoon. Bring a long lens for the river in the background.
- Laurel Hill Creek off Route 653. Pull over, scramble down, frame a boulder and moving water.
Golden Hour
- Ohiopyle Falls if you are willing to drive 15 minutes north. Wear shoes that grip.
- Outflow Recreation Area beach. Sunset over Yough Lake, twelve months a year, and the frame never gets old.
Bonus: Night
Drive back to Outflow Campground after dark for the Milky Way. Tripod, 20-second exposure, thank us later.
Gear Tips
- Lens: A 24 to 70 mm zoom covers 90 percent of Confluence.
- Polarizer: Cuts river glare and deepens foliage.
- Tripod: Lightweight is plenty.
- Water. Yes, on a photo walk. This town makes you move.
