Day Trip from Pittsburgh: Why Confluence Belongs on Your List

Pittsburgh is full of good day-trip options. Mount Washington. Fallingwater. Ohiopyle. But ask anyone who has actually driven 90 minutes southeast on a Saturday and they will tell you the real answer. Confluence.

Why It Works

Confluence is 85 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, about 90 minutes on a normal traffic day. It sits where three rivers meet in the heart of the Laurel Highlands, two minutes off the GAP Trail, fifteen minutes from Fallingwater, and within arm’s reach of Yough Lake. You get more in one afternoon than most tourist stops give you in a week.

The 8-Hour Plan

  • 10:00 AM. Leave Pittsburgh. Route 51 to Route 40, or the Turnpike if you are in a hurry.
  • 11:30 AM. Arrive and park by the town square. Coffee at Tissue Farm, a short wander through the gallery, a stroll across the footbridge to see the three rivers meet.
  • 12:30 PM. Lunch at Mitches or a slice at Riverside Pizza.
  • 1:30 PM. Rent a bike at Confluence Cyclery and ride 30 minutes out on the GAP toward Ohiopyle. Waterfalls, bridges, old tunnels. Turn around when you want to.
  • 3:30 PM. Swim. Park at the Ramcat access, hit the rocks, cool off.
  • 5:00 PM. Drink at Trailhead Brewing. Dinner at Pamela’s Pints and Provisions.
  • 8:00 PM. Drive home fat, happy, and quietly plotting a longer trip.

Why Not Ohiopyle Instead

Ohiopyle is great. It is also packed in July. Confluence gives you the same river, the same trail, and the same Laurel Highlands, minus the parking hunt and with a town that still feels like a town.

Extend It

If Saturday turns into Sunday, Sunday brunch at River’s Edge Cafe starts at 11 AM and our 48-hour Confluence itinerary has the rest of the plan ready for you.
