Confluence Gears Up for State’s Highest-Elevation Road Race

The Confluence Tourism Association invites cyclists, spectators, and adventure-seekers to celebrate summer’s high point—literally—at the Mt. Davis Challenge Road Race, returning to town on Sunday, July 27, 2025. The signature 40- and 56-mile routes climb from Confluence’s riverfront to the 3,213-foot summit of Mt. Davis, Pennsylvania’s highest point, before circling back through rolling farm country for a jubilant Turkeyfoot High School finish. Early-bird registration is now live on BikeReg and the event calendar at GAPtrail.org.

The Challenge traces a classic “lollipop” course: racers head south on lightly traveled backroads, tackle a six-mile ascent to the summit marker, descend the eastern slope, then fight gravity once more on the steep pitches of Savage Road before the downhill run to town. Long climbs, brisk descents, and rugged chip-seal pavement make this event a true test of legs and handling.

Mt. Davis is more than bragging rights—at 3,213 feet it’s the highest natural point in the Commonwealth, crowning the Laurel Highlands ridgeline that attracts cyclists from Pittsburgh, D.C., and beyond.

Racing begins with a neutral rollout at 10:00 a.m. from the town’s park square pavilion; course marshals, moto escorts, and Somerset County EMS teams will be on duty all day to ensure a safe, rolling road closure. Chip timing, SAG vehicles, and two on-course aid stations.

Race day is a town-wide party. Trailhead Brewing will tap its limited “Summit Lager,” Riverside Pizza fires up finish-line slices, or start the day with a Tissue Farm coffee while cow-bell-clanging spectators cheer in riders all afternoon. Family members not racing can stroll the shops on Logan Place, rent rail-trail bikes, or paddle a mellow stretch of the Youghiogheny.

VisitConfluence.info lists lodging options ranging from riverside camp spots to historic guesthouses.
